Where there's Smoke, there's Breathe

Cough-Aghh-Aachoo-Weeze-Hack! let me clear my throat before I start this blog post. I just came home from my usual walk along the Bow River, and it’s brown and smelly out there.

The blanketing smoke blowing in from the wildfires in BC makes it hard to enjoy outdoors or even to breathe. Of particular concern are small particles of ash blown in with the smoke and suspended in the air. They get deep in our bodies and are difficult to dislodge.

Breathing in soot and ash is no fun for anybody, but those with respiratory conditions, such as asthma or COPD are at particular risk. Fortunately we at Breathe Spa offer a service that helps to relieve the symptoms of smoke inhalation and to make you feel better. It is called Lymphatic Drainage.

Lymph is a pale fluid that flows inside our bodies, bathing the tissues and removing metabolic waste, bacteria and foreign substances. You can think of the lymphatic system as a sanitation department for the tissues of our body. It is lymph, which helps remove the ash particles, which we have inhaled.

Lymphatic drainage was discovered and developed in 1930s by doctors Emil and Estrid Vodder. It is a gentle rhythmic massage, which stimulates and speeds up the flow of lymph. Some of its benefits are:

1. More efficient removal of metabolic waste and foreign substances from the tissues (That's the important one for those suffering from smoke inhalation)

2. Reduction of pain and swelling

3. Faster recovery after injury or surgery

4. Improvement of skin appearance.

If you have been affected by the lingering smoke and want to feel better, come to Breathe Spa for lymphatic drainage. The full body treatment takes 60 to 90 minutes, but you probably don’t need that. The smoke entered your body through your nose and throat, so a 30 min. neck and face lymphatic drainage is likely all you need. And being a massage, it should be covered by your employment benefits.
