Time's a Wastin

Although we, massage therapists, are trained in anatomy and physiology, and our clients often discuss with us their health issues, we never claim to have medical qualifications. We work with certain aspects of your body and often succeed in relieving some types of myofascial and joint pain, but our work cannot replace an advice from a family physician or medical specialist. And of course we can’t diagnose, prescribe medications, or do a multitude of other things that doctors are qualified to perform.

So, setting the qualifications aside, let’s instead compare the time we spend with you, our clients (patients) when you come to us with your health concerns. The data I am using comes from a recent study at the University of Cambridge. The researchers there looked at 28 million doctor appointments in 67 countries around the world and determined the average time of a visit to a doctor.

Before listing the University of Cambridge research results, I’ll remind you that the full body massage with me takes between 75 to 90 minutes and includes a brief assessment.

There will be no further opinions from me, just the raw data. You make your own conclusions, whether having a massage, is a good value for your money or not.

Of the countries studied, the longest average time a doctor spends with a patient is in Sweden – 22.5 minutes, followed by the USA – 21 minute. This is about the amount of time I take just to work on your back, more if there are some special issues.

The average time of a doctor's appointment in North America and Western Europe is 12 – 15 minutes. This is less than most massage therapists allocate to your arms and hands.

In 25 countries a doctor spends with a patient less than 10 minutes per visit. I would spend more time than that just on your abdomen and the diaphragm.

Of these 25, in 18 countries the average visit to a doctor lasts 5 minutes, which is less time than it takes me to massage around one of your shoulder blades.

And, unbelievably, in one country mentioned in the study the average visit to a doctor lasts 48 seconds. Your massage therapist at Breathe Spa would have to hurry to complete massaging your toes in that amount of time.

Anyway, you got the message? And now get the massage. Go online to www.breathespa.ca or call us at 403-457-3060 and make an appointment.
